Food Revolution Day; A New Food Portfolio

So today, Friday 17th May is Food Revolution Day. A day where awareness of better food and essential cooking skills shares events around the world.

There doesn’t seem to be a better day to have added a food portfolio to my website than today!! Really starting to enjoy shooting some food, and even better you can get to eat it at the end sometimes too. Happy Days!

Pop on over to my website and check out the work I have up so far, and watch this space for some more coming through over the summer months!!

A Month in the Making

Some new work from me, which was a whole month in the making.

I struggled with this idea for a while, getting down to the nitty gritty details. I couldn’t quiet decide where I wanted to take this idea, but it had to have atmosphere. An almost classic feel to it, with a desk by a window and an adventure being planned before you is the story here.

I trolled the internet for appropriate props. The map is a 1922 plate from The Times. A crystal Whiskey glass helped the feeling of the era, but at the same time hinted at a lavish and luxury lifestyle. And yes, thats real whiskey in there. I couldn’t get it quiet right with tea. I toyed with the idea of a pipe being held in as though someone was leaning over, admiring a planned route, but ultimately, it over-complicated matters.

A diverse and not quiet lateral route around the map helped to bridge the gap over The Atlantic and stop a circular and pretty boring way round. The string, I dyed in super strong coffee to fit with the overall colour that I was going for here.

Looks like a month in the making can pay off.

Thanks, Edd

Personal work. What does it really mean?

I find myself pondering a lot over new ideas. Sometimes for weeks or months before I settle on something.
Personal work to me, gives a little extra. It’s something of myself, my own ideas and thoughts mapped out into a visual frame. All be it a little bit odd sometimes.
But I don’t want my personal work to just become a technical exercise. Of course that’s great, but sometimes getting too technical can make a concept or idea a little muddy when you get bogged down in over complicating things.
I feel that personal work keeps the love of photography alive for me. Having total control over the whole process from the seed of an idea right through to completion. That’s very important to me. And that’s the bit I love most, seeing that idea come through to a final distillation of the whole process.

Call me why you will, but my personal work is very important to me. Because it is me. All of me. Nothing more, nothing less.
Thanks, Edward.

P.s excuse the image quality, this was on the move!!

Photographers Block

Photographers block.

We all get it right? That desperate need to shoot something new and interesting that will captivate your audience, yet your feeding off scraps for ideas. Feeling generally uninspired and flat about the prospect of shooting something in a few weeks time, that you have yet to cultivate an idea and work with, develop and see through into fruition.

So thats where I am at the minute. I have a few ideas floating around that I am hoping to get done over the next 6 or so weeks. But the ideas are vague. Only select ones will make the cut. The ones that excite me from the first thought. And they seem to be in short supply at the minute, or the ones that I find myself wanting to shoot more have to be shelved for a while as budgets get eaten up in a heartbeat.

Its a phase. I’ll come through. Hopefully.

Asian Delicacies Explored

A few weeks ago now I photographed Asian sweets as part of a project based in a multi cultural area. I chose to photograph them in a studio environment away from the hustle and bustle of the street. This would give me complete control over how I was able to create the work.

These sweets are often eaten in times of celebration from wedding to births. I loved the various colours, shapes and textures that you could find in these sweets!! I think this could just be the tip of the iceberg with them, I could have gone on buying different types, but I had to draw the line!

Below is my final set of images for this work, with an overall graphic and structured element to the frames.

Thanks for taking the time to look, Edd

Origins of a Project. Just.

Great news!! So a few weeks back I had this idea for a new project, sent a few emails in hope more than expectation.

Anyway, I just heard back and its good news. Its lovely when people want to support and work with you on some personal projects. I’ll keep you all posted with this one. If May brings with it some good weather, maybe. Just maybe.

Watch this space!

Jacket On, Jacket Off

Its a simple idea that struck me whilst I was tucking into a few of my 5 a day a few weeks ago. There’s 2 sides to fruit and veg. Its ‘raw’ or un-peeled state and cooked or prepared ready to eat. I thought it would make from some interesting frames if I could photograph the fruit/ veg on the same colour background. Jacket on and jacket off so to speak. A simple idea, nothing fancy at all. Just fruit being fruit and veg being veg.Just in 2 different ways. Here are a few of my recent pieces that follow the idea. Hope you enjoy!!Screen shot 2013-03-25 at 13.55.51

Thanks, Edward
